Agriculture Department Promotes Youth Involvement in Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences

The Department of Agriculture in St. Kitts, through its Veterinary Services Unit, has embarked on a robust youth engagement program aimed at fostering interest and building capacity in agriculture and veterinary medicine. Three students from Saddlers Secondary School and one from Basseterre High School were given the opportunity to accompany both extension and veterinary officers on their daily rounds. This firsthand exposure allowed the students to gain a deeper understanding of the practical aspects of animal care and the diverse responsibilities within the agricultural and veterinary professions. Furthermore, the Veterinary Services Unit organized a field trip for students enrolled in the Introduction to Livestock Animal Husbandry course at Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC). This field trip provided a practical demonstration of livestock health management techniques, offering students a unique opportunity to witness and participate in procedures such as pregnancy diagnosis using ultrasound technology and animal castration. The experience was designed to be highly interactive, allowing students to practice these techniques under the guidance of experienced professionals. This hands-on training not only reinforces classroom learning but also instills confidence and competence in handling livestock and performing essential procedures.

The culmination of the field trip involved students performing surgical castration on piglets under close supervision, following a detailed demonstration. This practical exercise provided invaluable hands-on experience in a controlled environment, allowing students to develop essential surgical skills and gain a better understanding of animal anatomy and physiology. By providing this opportunity, the Department of Agriculture is equipping students with practical skills that are directly applicable to livestock management and contributing to the development of a skilled workforce for the agricultural sector.
