BHS Triumphs Over CSS in the Ginseng-Up Classics

The Nevis Athletic Stadium buzzed with excitement on Sunday, February 23rd, as it hosted an inter-island secondary school athletics championship between schools from Nevis and St. Kitts. The atmosphere was electric, charged with the anticipation of fierce competition and impressive athletic feats. The presence of distinguished patron Mr. Denzil Parris, a long-serving sports personality from Nevis, added a touch of gravitas to the event. His impeccable attire reflected the importance of the occasion, setting a tone of respect for the athletes and the spirit of competition. The day promised a showcase of young talent and a celebration of athletic prowess.

The day’s proceedings commenced with a vibrant march past of the participating schools, a display of youthful energy and team spirit. Following this, a formal ceremony, expertly guided by Education Officer Mrs. Terez Dore, formally opened the championship. Adding their voices to the occasion were representatives from Carib Brewery/Ginseng-up, a prominent sponsor of the event, underscoring the importance of community support for youth athletics. Further enhancing the significance of the event was an address by the Director of Sports on St. Kitts, Mr. Hazel, emphasizing the role of sports in education and youth development. The stage was set for a memorable day of track and field competition.

Seven schools from across the two islands locked horns in the quest for athletic supremacy. Among them were the defending champions, Charlestown Secondary School (CSS), eager to retain their title. Challenging them were Basseterre High School (BHS), Verchilds High School, Cayon High School, Washington Archibald High School, Gingerland Secondary School (GSS), and Saddlers High School. Each team brought its own hopes and aspirations, fueling the competitive fire that burned brightly throughout the day. The track was primed for a showdown.

The athletes, fueled by adrenaline and the roar of the crowd, tested their limits across a range of track and field disciplines. The program featured a diverse array of events, catering to different strengths and specializations. Sprinters blazed down the track in the 100 meters and 400 meters, while middle-distance runners showcased their endurance in the 800 meters and grueling 3000 meters. The hurdles events demanded both speed and technical precision, while the relays provided a platform for teamwork and perfectly synchronized baton exchanges. The competition was fierce, pushing athletes to their peak performance and resulting in several existing records being shattered. Each race was a testament to the dedication and hard work of the young athletes.

As the dust settled and the final results were tallied, a new champion emerged. Basseterre High School, with a dominant performance across multiple events, dethroned the reigning champions, Charlestown Secondary School. Their impressive medal haul of 10 gold, 6 silver, and 4 bronze solidified their position at the top of the leaderboard. Verchilds High School also delivered a commendable performance, securing second place with 9 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals. Charlestown Secondary, despite their valiant efforts, had to settle for third place, showcasing the intense competitiveness of the championship. Their final tally stood at 5 gold, 10 silver, and 13 bronze medals, demonstrating their depth of talent across various events.

The final standings painted a vivid picture of the day’s triumphs and close contests. Washington Archibald High School secured fourth place with 5 gold, 7 silver, and 6 bronze medals, followed closely by Gingerland Secondary School with 4 gold, 10 silver, and 7 bronze. Saddlers Secondary School, with a focused strategy, claimed 4 gold medals, while Cayon High School, despite not securing any gold, silver, or bronze medals, earned a commendable bronze. The championship highlighted not just individual talent but also the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, and the unwavering support of coaches and school communities.
