Caribbean Teacher Development Workshop in Mathematics
The Commonwealth of Learning (COL), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education of St. Kitts and Nevis, inaugurated a two-day workshop titled “Advancing Caribbean Teachers in Mathematics” on January 16, 2025, in Basseterre, St. Kitts. This initiative directly addresses the declining mathematics performance observed among students both within the Federation and across the Caribbean region. The workshop aims to equip mathematics educators with cutting-edge teaching methodologies and resources, fostering a community of practice among them. This concerted effort, stemming from discussions between COL representatives and key officials within the Ministry of Education, underscores the commitment to enhancing mathematics education in St. Kitts and Nevis.
The workshop’s genesis lies in the recognition of a troubling trend: the declining mathematics proficiency among students. This decline, observed both locally and regionally, prompted the Ministry of Education and the Commonwealth of Learning to collaborate on a proactive solution. The “Advancing Caribbean Teachers in Mathematics” workshop represents a tangible response to this challenge, aiming to provide teachers with the necessary tools and strategies to reverse this trend. The workshop’s design reflects a deep understanding of the need for continuous professional development for educators, particularly in the face of evolving educational landscapes.
Mr. Francil Morris, Chief Education Officer, elucidated the workshop’s origins, tracing its development from initial discussions to its realization as a vital professional development opportunity. He emphasized the collaborative nature of the project, highlighting the contributions of Shontal and Carol from the Commonwealth of Learning, Permanent Secretary Lisa Pistana, Education Officer Carol Boddie, Principal Education Officer Londa Brown, and himself. This collaborative spirit underscores the shared responsibility for improving mathematics education and the commitment of all stakeholders to achieving this goal.
Mrs. Lisa Romayne-Pistana, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, conveyed remarks on behalf of the Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, emphasizing the Ministry’s dedication to enhancing students’ mathematical abilities. She highlighted the importance of mathematics in everyday life, stressing the need to cultivate a positive attitude towards the subject. The workshop’s focus on integrating Open Distance Learning (ODL), Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL), and gender-responsive strategies reflects the Ministry’s commitment to modernizing teaching practices and ensuring inclusivity in education. Mrs. Pistana expressed confidence that the training would empower teachers and enhance their ability to engage students effectively.
The workshop’s curriculum emphasizes practical methodologies, including Open Distance Learning (ODL), Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL), and gender-responsive teaching strategies. ODL facilitates flexible learning opportunities, accommodating diverse learning styles and schedules. TEL integrates technology to create interactive and engaging learning experiences. Gender-responsive strategies ensure that teaching practices cater to the specific needs of both male and female students, promoting equitable learning outcomes. By incorporating these innovative approaches, the workshop empowers teachers to create inclusive and stimulating learning environments for all students.
The Ministry of Education’s commitment to enhancing mathematics education signifies a broader recognition of the subject’s crucial role in individual and societal development. Mathematics proficiency is not merely an academic pursuit; it is a fundamental skill essential for navigating the complexities of modern life. By investing in the professional development of mathematics teachers, the Ministry is laying the foundation for a more mathematically literate population, equipped to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. The “Advancing Caribbean Teachers in Mathematics Workshop” is a significant step towards realizing this vision. The workshop is envisioned to have a lasting impact on educators and students alike, ultimately contributing to improved mathematics performance in the Federation. Its comprehensive approach, combining innovative teaching strategies and a focus on community building, sets the stage for sustained improvements in mathematics education. The collaboration between the Commonwealth of Learning and the Ministry of Education exemplifies the power of partnerships in driving educational progress.
