Dr. James Fletcher Appointed as REN21 Renewable Energy Champion

Dr. James Fletcher, a distinguished figure in Caribbean sustainable development and climate action, has been recognized as a pioneer in the global transition to renewable energy. REN21, the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century, has named him one of its inaugural Renewable Energy Champions, a newly launched initiative designed to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy sources worldwide. This prestigious recognition underscores Dr. Fletcher’s significant contributions to sustainable energy policy, regional cooperation, and international climate advocacy, solidifying his role as a key leader in the fight against climate change and the pursuit of clean energy solutions.

The announcement of Dr. Fletcher’s appointment came during the Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum (CREF) 2025, a pivotal event for the advancement of renewable energy in the region. The Renewable Energy Champions Initiative, spearheaded by REN21, aims to harness the expertise and influence of former government ministers who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in driving renewable energy transformations. These Champions will act as mentors and advisors, providing strategic guidance to national leaders and stakeholders, fostering political will, and facilitating knowledge exchange to accelerate the global shift towards sustainable energy systems. Dr. Fletcher joins Ramón Méndez Galain of Uruguay, President of REN21, as one of the two initial Champions selected to lead this important initiative.

Dr. Fletcher’s selection stems from his remarkable track record in advancing Saint Lucia’s sustainable energy agenda during his tenure as Minister for Public Service, Information, Broadcasting, Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology. His work focused on crafting and implementing effective renewable energy policies, establishing strategic partnerships, and promoting regional integration in the Caribbean’s pursuit of sustainable development. Furthermore, Dr. Fletcher has been a prominent voice on the international stage, advocating for climate justice and playing a crucial role in the Paris Agreement negotiations, particularly championing the ambitious goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. His unwavering commitment to climate action has earned him widespread recognition within the climate diplomacy and policy arenas.

Beyond his ministerial role, Dr. Fletcher’s dedication to sustainable development and climate action extends through his work with various organizations and initiatives. He currently serves as the CARICOM Climate Envoy, representing the Caribbean Community’s interests in climate negotiations and advocating for regional climate resilience. He is also a Council Member of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), contributing to the global promotion of sustainable economic growth. In addition, Dr. Fletcher founded SOLORICON Ltd, a Saint Lucia-based consultancy specializing in climate change, renewable energy, sustainable development, and environmental governance.

Dr. Fletcher’s commitment to empowering future generations is evident in his leadership of the Caribbean Climate Justice Project and the Youth IRIE (Innovators for Renewable and Inclusive Energy) initiative.
