Drew Government Reaches Midterm: 998 Days of Sustainable Progress

Midterm Triumphs: St. Kitts and Nevis Government Marks Two and a Half Years of Transformative Progress

The government of St. Kitts and Nevis, led by Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, has reached the midpoint of its constitutional term, marking 998 days of focused leadership and strategic policy execution. Since assuming office on August 6, 2022, the administration has embarked on a transformative journey to modernize the Federation and establish it as a Sustainable Island State. The government’s midterm report card reveals significant accomplishments across various sectors, showcasing a commitment to economic empowerment, improved healthcare, enhanced social protection, strengthened education and youth development, good governance, and environmental resilience.

The administration’s initial actions, termed the "Post-COVID Reset," set the tone for its proactive approach to governance. Within the first week, borders were reopened to revitalize the tourism sector, tuition fees at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College were waived, and the Children’s Medical Fund was established. These decisive measures signaled the government’s commitment to economic recovery, accessible education, and healthcare for all citizens. These early initiatives laid the groundwork for a revitalized national agenda focused on "Powering Progress."

Significant strides have been made in bolstering the economy and creating job opportunities. The corporate income tax was reduced, the minimum wage was raised, and programs to support small businesses, such as the COVID-recovery loan and the 40/40 Booster Grant, were implemented. Furthermore, the government launched a national savings program coupled with financial literacy initiatives, promoting financial independence among citizens. The ongoing digital transformation strategy streamlines access to government services and enhances transparency. These combined efforts demonstrate a commitment not just to economic recovery but to long-term economic transformation and empowerment.

The healthcare sector has also benefited from substantial investments. The government settled outstanding medical supply debt, invested in training for healthcare professionals, and upgraded medical equipment. The return of 24/7 doctor services at Pogson Medical Centre and ongoing renovations at JNF Hospital signify a concerted effort to improve healthcare access and quality. St. Kitts and Nevis also achieved a remarkable milestone in child health, recording zero deaths among children aged one to four in 2022.

Housing and social protection programs have strengthened the social fabric of the nation. The Smart Housing Programme aims to provide climate-resilient homes for working families. The Budget Boost Wallet provides monthly financial support to lower-income workers, and the restructuring of social safety nets aims to uplift vulnerable populations. The LIFT program (Livelihood Improvement for Family Transformation) replaces the Poverty Alleviation Programme with a focus on long-term empowerment. Debt relief initiatives and increased support for seniors, including expanded daycare programs and higher pensions, further demonstrate the government’s commitment to social well-being.

Education and youth development are central pillars of the government’s vision. Free CFBC tuition, reduced student loan interest rates, and the Graduate Refinance Credit program all contribute to making higher education more accessible. The Youth Rising Higher Programme offers debt forgiveness for young professionals. The STEAM initiative (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) is being integrated into primary schools, fostering future generations of innovators. Infrastructure improvements and security upgrades in schools further enhance the learning environment.

The government has demonstrated a strong commitment to good governance through the passage of over 30 transformative laws. These include the Anti-Corruption Act, Freedom of Information (Amendment) Act, Whistleblower Protection Act, and the Integrity in Public Life (Amendment) Act. The establishment of the Joint Constitutional Review Committee and the Justice Reform Committee underscores the government’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and modernizing the justice system. Pension reform ensures that public servants receive their rightful gratuities and pension entitlements.

Significant investments in sports and entertainment infrastructure, alongside the establishment of the Department of Creative Economy, signify the government’s recognition of culture as a driver of economic growth and social development. Renovations to existing facilities and the construction of a new football stadium are boosting the sporting sector. The Department of Creative Economy is providing workshops in various artistic disciplines, empowering young people with valuable creative skills. The successful revival of national celebrations, including Sugar Mas, underscores the importance of cultural heritage.

Environmental resilience and food security are also high priorities. The commissioning of a new potable water well, the construction of a solar-powered desalination plant, and the implementation of a large-scale solar energy project are key steps towards sustainable development. The Greenhouse Village Project and the introduction of recycling programs in schools further demonstrate the government’s commitment to environmental stewardship and promoting sustainable practices.

As the St. Kitts and Nevis government embarks on the second half of its term, it remains dedicated to its vision of a Sustainable Island State. The administration’s focus on economic empowerment, sustainable development, good governance, and equity for all citizens promises continued progress and transformation in the years to come.
