Evelyn Browne Celebrates Centenarian Status in Nevis

Evelyn Browne, a resident of Nevis, reached the momentous milestone of 100 years, joining the ranks of the Federation’s esteemed centenarians. Born in Jessups Village and now residing in Prospect Estate, Mrs. Browne celebrated her centenary surrounded by family and well-wishers, including representatives from the Nevis Island Administration (NIA). Her remarkable journey through a century of life was marked by resilience, industriousness, and humility, qualities that have earned her the admiration and respect of her community. Her life story, as shared by her daughters and chronicled in a biography, portrays a woman of strength and adaptability, who navigated challenging times with grace and determination.

Mrs. Browne’s life journey began during the tumultuous era of World War II, a period marked by economic hardship and limited opportunities. Undeterred by these adversities, she embraced diverse roles, showcasing her adaptability and unwavering work ethic. From toiling in the fields as a farmer to producing charcoal and providing domestic services, Mrs. Browne’s resourcefulness enabled her to overcome the challenges of the time. Her hard work and determination paved the way for her entry and success in the formal workforce.

Beyond her various roles, Mrs. Browne’s contributions extend to pioneering work in the cleaning business, providing home domestic services to clients across both Nevis and St. Kitts as early as the 1940s. Her entrepreneurial spirit further manifested in the 1970s and 80s, when she established and operated a thriving village shop, store, and snackette. Her culinary skills were renowned, and her baked goods, along with her signature ginger beer and mauby, became local favorites. This entrepreneurial venture speaks not only to her business acumen but also to her ability to create a welcoming and vibrant community hub.

The NIA joined in celebrating Mrs. Browne’s remarkable achievement, recognizing her as a testament to the island’s enduring heritage. The commemoration included a visit from dignitaries, including Her Honour Mrs. Hyleeta Liburd, the Deputy Governor-General for Nevis, who presented Mrs. Browne with a special gift. Her Excellency Dame Marcella Liburd, the Governor-General, also recognized her centenary with a commemorative gift and medal. The Honourable Eric Evelyn, Deputy Premier, delivered a bouquet on behalf of Premier the Honourable Mark Brantley and the NIA Cabinet, further signifying the government’s appreciation for her contributions to the community.

Adding to the celebration, the Honourable Spencer Brand, Minister of Posts, announced the forthcoming issuance of a commemorative stamp in Mrs. Browne’s honor, a lasting tribute to her enduring legacy. Her family also participated in the festivities, offering heartfelt tributes through prayers, poems, songs, and a dance, reflecting the deep affection and respect they hold for her. The Honorable Janet Nisbett, Mrs. Browne’s great-niece and Minister of Social Development, presented a plaque on behalf of the Ministry and the TDC Group of Companies, adding a personal touch to the official recognition.

Mrs. Browne’s centenary celebration was not merely a recognition of her individual longevity but a celebration of the resilience and spirit of the Nevisian community. Her life story, marked by hard work, adaptability, and entrepreneurial spirit, serves as an inspiration to future generations. As one of six centenarians residing on Nevis, five women and one man, she embodies the island’s rich heritage and enduring strength.
