Government Housing Program Expansion Prompts Land Clearing in St. Peter’s and Sandy Point

The government of St. Kitts and Nevis embarked on an ambitious housing initiative with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony in Stapleton, St. Peter’s, on December 13, 2024. This project, a component of a broader, revolutionary housing program, aims to construct 26 climate-smart homes in Stapleton, offering single, two, and three-bedroom options. The initiative is a collaborative effort involving East Coast Housing Development Ltd. as the construction company, the National Housing Corporation (NHC) as a key partner, and the Ministry of Sustainable Development, which is responsible for allocating land across St. Kitts for the construction of these homes. This event signaled the expansion of the government’s commitment to providing affordable housing solutions for its citizens.

The groundbreaking ceremony highlighted the collaborative nature of the project and underscored the government’s dedication to community involvement. Dirck Singh, Director of East Coast Housing Development Ltd., expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the government’s vision of accessible housing. He emphasized the local focus of the project, noting that contractors employed are drawn from the respective constituencies where the homes are being built, fostering economic opportunities within the communities. The housing initiative is not confined to Stapleton. Concurrent construction activities are underway in other communities, demonstrating the widespread impact of the program. Foundations for 20 homes are being laid in Ottleys, and land has been cleared for 30 homes in Farm Meadows, Sandy Point. Further expansion is planned for Newton Ground and other communities in the near future, indicating the government’s commitment to addressing the housing needs across the island. This multi-location approach ensures a more equitable distribution of resources and benefits across different regions.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Housing, the Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, underscored the significant progress achieved since 2022. He reported the delivery of 112 homes through the NHC, surpassing previous administrations’ achievements within comparable timeframes. He emphasized the program’s focus on assisting individuals who have owned land for extended periods but lacked the resources to build. The program prioritizes fulfilling the long-held dreams of homeownership for many who have patiently awaited this opportunity. The initiative also extends to individuals pre-approved by financial institutions through the NHC application process, further broadening the reach and impact of the program. Dr. Hanley reinforced the government’s unwavering commitment to expanding housing stock and creating safe and comfortable communities.
