Investigations Launched into Newcastle and Halfway Tree Shootings
On September 18, 2025, the tranquil islands of St. Kitts and Nevis were marred by two separate shooting incidents, leaving two men injured and communities shaken. The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) swiftly launched investigations into both incidents, seeking to apprehend the perpetrators and restore a sense of security to the affected areas. The first incident unfolded on the larger island of St. Kitts, in the Halfway Tree area, sometime between 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM. Keszron Duporte, a resident of Halfway Tree, was driving towards Basseterre when a black jeep suddenly pulled alongside his vehicle. The driver of the jeep, without apparent provocation, fired several shots at Mr. Duporte’s vehicle. One of the bullets struck Mr. Duporte in his right forearm. Despite the sudden attack, Mr. Duporte managed to maintain control of his vehicle and sought medical attention. He was subsequently treated for his injuries at the Joseph N. France General Hospital and later discharged.
The second shooting incident occurred on the smaller island of Nevis, in the Newcastle area, approximately two hours prior to the St. Kitts incident, between 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM. Leon “Copper” Didder, a resident of Nisbett Settlement in Newcastle, was approaching his vehicle when he was ambushed by two masked and armed assailants. The attackers, concealing their identities, opened fire on Mr. Didder, striking him in his left upper arm and forearm. Despite his injuries, Mr. Didder was able to escape the immediate threat and was quickly transported to Alexandra Hospital by a private vehicle. He received prompt medical treatment and was subsequently discharged.
The RSCNPF, recognizing the gravity of these incidents, immediately mobilized its resources to investigate both shootings thoroughly. The Violent Crime Unit took the lead in the St. Kitts investigation, while officers on Nevis responded swiftly to the Newcastle incident. The Crime Scene Unit processed both locations meticulously, gathering potential evidence that could shed light on the identities and motives of the perpetrators. Spent shell casings, tire tracks, and any other relevant items were carefully collected and documented. Investigators also began interviewing potential witnesses in both areas, seeking any information that might assist in identifying the suspects.
The RSCNPF, committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice, issued a public appeal for information. They urged anyone who may have witnessed either incident or possessed any relevant information, regardless of how insignificant it might seem, to come forward and assist with the investigations. Recognizing that some individuals might be hesitant to provide information openly, the RSCNPF also encouraged anonymous reporting through the Crime Stoppers’ hotline, 707. This confidential channel allows individuals to share crucial information without fear of reprisal, helping to ensure the safety and cooperation of potential witnesses.
The investigations into both shootings remain active and ongoing. The RSCNPF is pursuing multiple lines of inquiry, including examining potential connections between the two incidents, exploring possible motives for the attacks, and analyzing the collected forensic evidence. Detectives are working diligently to identify the individuals involved in both shootings and bring them before the courts. The RSCNPF is committed to providing updates to the public as the investigations progress and significant developments emerge. Maintaining transparency and keeping the community informed is paramount in building trust and ensuring public safety.
The two shooting incidents on September 18th, 2025, served as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of even tranquil island communities to the scourge of gun violence. The RSCNPF, with the support and cooperation of the public, is determined to bring those responsible to justice and to implement measures to enhance the safety and security of all residents of St. Kitts and Nevis. The investigations represent not only a pursuit of justice for the victims but also a commitment to restoring peace and tranquility to the affected communities. The RSCNPF remains steadfast in its resolve to combat crime and ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens.
