Kittitian and Nevisian Folklore Enlivens the 2025 Taiwan Lantern Festival

The 2025 Taiwan Lantern Festival in Taoyuan witnessed a vibrant display of Saint Kitts and Nevis’ rich cultural heritage through a captivating lantern presentation titled “Vibrant Folklore.” The lantern showcased five prominent elements of Kittitian and Nevisian folklore: the Moko Jumbie, a towering stilt walker; the Clown, a symbol of playful festivity; the Actors, representing the dramatic arts; the Bull, embodying strength and tradition; and the Masquerade, a vibrant expression of costumed revelry. These figures were set against a picturesque backdrop of Nevis Peak, the majestic volcanic summit that dominates the island’s landscape, creating a compelling visual narrative of the nation’s cultural identity.

The official unveiling of the “Vibrant Folklore” lantern took place during a dedicated switch-on ceremony, attended by dignitaries and cultural representatives. Among those present were Saint Kitts and Nevis Ambassador to Taiwan, His Excellency Donya L. Francis; Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Chia Lung Lin; Deputy Director General of the Taiwan Tourism Administration, Dr. Hsin-Jen Lin; the lantern’s creator, Mr. Wen Chuan Huang; and Saint Kitts and Nevis student and cultural ambassador, Kevrone Phipps. His meticulous craftsmanship, demonstrated over several years of creating lanterns for the Embassy, brought the nation’s vibrant folklore to life in a visually stunning form. Ambassador Francis, in turn, received a plaque of appreciation from Dr. Hsin-Jen Lin, recognizing the Embassy’s continued participation in the annual Taiwan Lantern Festival. This ongoing engagement underscored the importance of the festival as a platform for cultural diplomacy and international collaboration.

The celebratory atmosphere of the ceremony was further enhanced by a captivating steel pan performance by Ms. Jacinth Hunkins, adding a distinctly Caribbean musical flair to the event. The presence of other international students studying in Taiwan, dressed in their respective cultural attire and costumes, added to the rich tapestry of cultural diversity on display. Their participation underscored the festival’s role as a celebration of global cultures and a testament to the power of cultural exchange in fostering understanding and appreciation between nations.
