LAMAT Delivers Medical Care to Over Two Thousand Patients in Saint Kitts and Nevis

The 2025 Lesser Antilles Medical Assistance Team (LAMAT) mission, a collaborative effort between the United States Air Force Southern Command (US SOUTHCOM), the Republic of China (Taiwan), and the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, marked a significant milestone in international healthcare cooperation. From March 24th to April 4th, 2025, a dedicated team of medical professionals converged on Saint Kitts and Nevis, offering a wide range of specialized medical services and strengthening the local healthcare infrastructure. This humanitarian endeavor not only provided direct care to over 2,130 patients and performed 135 surgeries but also emphasized capacity building and community outreach, solidifying the mission’s impact beyond immediate medical needs. The mission served as a testament to the power of diplomatic partnerships and their potential to enhance healthcare systems in developing nations.

The LAMAT mission addressed a diverse spectrum of medical needs, encompassing emergency medicine, neonatal and pediatric care, intensive care, dentistry, pharmacy, audiology, physiotherapy, family medicine, radiology, diabetes education, and nutrition. This comprehensive approach ensured that a wide range of healthcare services were accessible to the population of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Beyond direct patient care, the team’s expertise extended to repairing 21 vital pieces of medical equipment, saving the government substantial financial resources and strengthening the long-term sustainability of the local healthcare system. This multifaceted approach underscored the mission’s commitment to not only addressing immediate medical issues but also to bolstering the overall capacity of the healthcare system in Saint Kitts and Nevis.

The Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas, Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saint Kitts and Nevis, lauded the LAMAT mission as a symbol of successful international collaboration and a crucial component of the Federation’s broader strategy for development. He highlighted the strong diplomatic ties between Saint Kitts and Nevis, the United States, and Taiwan, emphasizing how these partnerships have fostered growth across various sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, education, energy, and information and communication technology. Dr. Douglas positioned the LAMAT mission as a cornerstone of these partnerships, demonstrating the tangible benefits of international cooperation for the advancement of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

A key element of the 2025 LAMAT mission was its focus on capacity building within the local medical community. The team conducted over 31 hours of educational sessions, providing invaluable training to local emergency room staff, surgical teams, and intensive care professionals. This knowledge transfer aimed to equip local healthcare workers with advanced medical skills and best practices observed during the mission. Dr. Douglas emphasized the importance of this educational component, expressing his pride in the opportunity for Saint Kitts and Nevis’ medical professionals to gain international experience and potentially share their expertise with other countries in need in the future.

One of the innovative additions to the 2025 mission was the introduction of a Community Health Fair. Held on April 2nd and 3rd at the Newtown Community Center, the fair provided free consultations and health screenings to the public. This initiative significantly enhanced access to healthcare services for the community, with 117 patients benefiting from the free services. The Community Health Fair embodied the mission’s dedication to community engagement and its commitment to reaching beyond hospital walls to deliver vital healthcare services directly to the population.
