The St. Christopher & Nevis Social Security Board (SSB) is seeking a qualified Legal Counsel to join their team. The successful candidate will actively participate in litigation related to debt collection and represent the SSB in various courts, including the Magistrate’s Court, High Court, and Court of Appeal. They will also support and represent the organization at Appeals Tribunal hearings.

The Legal Counsel’s duties extend beyond litigation and encompass a wide range of legal advisory services. They will provide counsel to the Board of Directors, the CEO/Director, management, and various departments within the SSB. This includes advising on proposed contracts, commercial transactions, and the development of related legal documentation. To ensure a thorough understanding of relevant legal principles, the Legal Counsel will conduct presentations and seminars to educate various stakeholders within the SSB. These educational initiatives will focus on legal aspects that may impact the Board’s interests. Furthermore, the Legal Counsel will be expected to supervise the support staff within the Legal Unit and contribute to the development and implementation of the unit’s action plan.

The SSB seeks an individual with a robust legal background and a strong understanding of legal principles, practices, and proceedings. Applicants must be qualified Attorneys-at-Law, holding a Bachelor of Laws degree and a Legal Education Certificate from a recognized regional law school. In addition to these academic qualifications, candidates should possess a minimum of two years of post-bar experience practicing law within the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis or the broader Caribbean region. Practical experience in litigation and legal research is essential, as is a strong understanding of the legal principles associated with public law decision-making.

Beyond technical legal expertise, the ideal candidate will demonstrate a range of essential skills and abilities. They should possess a working knowledge of legislative interpretation, including the ability to analyze and interpret laws, rules, and agreements. Familiarity with Social Security Regulations is highly advantageous. Strong analytical skills, coupled with the ability to formulate practical recommendations, are also crucial. Given the collaborative nature of the role, the Legal Counsel must be a skilled communicator, capable of articulating legal concepts clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Strong advocacy, negotiation, and deliberation skills are also essential.
