Ministry of Gender Affairs Presents Empower-Her Awards to Five Recipients on International Women’s Day
The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Ministry of Gender Affairs marked International Women’s Day 2025 with a week of empowering activities, culminating in the Empower-Her Award and Luncheon. This celebratory event, held on March 8th at Banana’s Bistro, served as a platform to recognize five exceptional women who have significantly contributed to the island’s development across various sectors. Uniquely, the award categories and nominees were determined by public input, reflecting a community-driven approach to honoring these remarkable individuals. The five awardees, chosen from a pool of nominees submitted by the public, were Ms. Shobaina Clarke for Entrepreneurship, Nurse Lorraine Archibald for Community Health Services, Dr. Kerdis Clarke for Mental Health and Wellbeing, Ms. Terysia Herbert for Environmental and Historical Conservation, and Ms. Dawn Kelly, recipient of the Minister’s Award. Each woman represents a vital aspect of Nevisian society, demonstrating the diverse contributions of women to the island’s overall development. Ms. Clarke’s entrepreneurial endeavors showcase the spirit of innovation and economic empowerment, while Nurse Archibald’s dedication to community health underscores the importance of accessible healthcare. The week began with a church service at the Brick Kiln Church of God on March 9th, followed by a Women’s Reproductive Health Webinar on March 10th, highlighting the importance of spiritual and physical wellbeing. These events, part of a larger week-long celebration, demonstrate the Ministry’s commitment to addressing various aspects of women’s lives, including physical and spiritual health, economic empowerment, and professional development. The diversity of the activities ensured a holistic approach to women’s empowerment and addressed a broad range of issues pertinent to their overall wellbeing.
Further highlighting the commitment to women’s health, the Ministry offered free mammogram screenings at the Alexandra Hospital from March 10th to 14th, with a doctor’s referral required. This initiative reflects the Ministry’s proactive approach to preventative healthcare for women. By providing access to free screenings, the Ministry aims to empower women to prioritize their health and take proactive steps toward early detection and prevention. This initiative emphasizes the importance of accessible healthcare and underscores the commitment to supporting women’s physical wellbeing. The requirement of a doctor’s referral ensures proper medical guidance and facilitates follow-up care if necessary.
The week of activities concluded with Wear Purple Day on March 14th, a TDC Car Care Clinic Practical Workshop for women on March 15th, and an M-Factor Film Screening and Panel Discussion at NEPAC on March 16th. These events, ranging from symbolic displays of solidarity to practical skill-building workshops and thought-provoking discussions, cater to diverse interests and needs within the female community. Wear Purple Day provided a visual demonstration of unity and support for women, while the car care clinic empowered women with practical skills and knowledge. The film screening and panel discussion provided a platform for engaging with important issues and fostering dialogue. By offering a diverse range of activities, the Ministry aimed to provide something for every woman, further promoting inclusivity and celebrating the multifaceted nature of female empowerment.
