Nevis Cooperative Credit Union Launches SOAR Initiative with Adoption of Two Primary Schools
The Nevis Cooperative Credit Union Limited (NCCU) has embarked on a significant community initiative, the Schools Outreach Assistance and Rewards (SOAR) program, aimed at supporting and uplifting the educational environment of primary schools across Nevis. This inaugural year of the program focuses on the Ivor Walters Primary School and the Charlestown Primary School, officially adopted by the NCCU for the 2024-2025 academic year. The program, conceived by NCCU staff member Zahvelisia Claxton, underscores the credit union’s commitment to community development and youth empowerment, aligning with its core principle of concern for the community.
The SOAR program’s formal launch at both schools involved presentations by NCCU representatives, who articulated the program’s vision and objectives. At Ivor Walters Primary School, Candice Pinney, a member of the SOAR committee, emphasized the program’s focus on fostering community spirit and outlined the various projects and events planned in collaboration with the school until September 2025. Principal Serena Browne warmly welcomed the initiative, expressing gratitude for NCCU’s commitment to its social responsibility and its recognition of the importance of supporting local schools. Similarly, at Charlestown Primary School, Bethia Pogson, another SOAR committee member, detailed the program’s aims, highlighting the positive impact it is expected to have. Principal Cheryl Haynes echoed the sentiments of gratitude, recognizing the potential of the SOAR program to leave a lasting impression on the school community.
Beyond the formal launch ceremonies, the NCCU integrated interactive activities designed to engage students and familiarize them with the SOAR program. Students had the opportunity to win prizes by correctly answering questions related to the initiative, further promoting awareness and enthusiasm for the partnership. This interactive approach not only introduced the program in a fun and engaging manner but also underscored the credit union’s desire to actively involve students in the initiative.
The SOAR program embodies a comprehensive and sustainable approach to community engagement. Its rotational structure ensures that all public primary schools on Nevis will benefit from a year of dedicated support, resources, and outreach activities over a four-year cycle. This strategic approach maximizes the program’s impact, ensuring equitable distribution of resources and creating a sustainable platform for ongoing collaboration between the NCCU and the educational community.
The program’s emphasis on rewards and assistance highlights the NCCU’s commitment to not only providing financial support but also actively participating in the schools’ development. The planned projects and events will likely address various needs within the schools, ranging from infrastructural improvements to educational enrichment activities. This multifaceted approach underscores the NCCU’s recognition of the diverse needs within each school community and its dedication to tailoring support to meet those specific requirements.
The adoption of the Ivor Walters Primary School and the Charlestown Primary School marks the beginning of a long-term partnership between the NCCU and the Nevisian educational system. The SOAR program represents a significant investment in the future of the island’s youth, fostering a stronger sense of community and empowering students to thrive academically and personally. The collaborative nature of the program ensures that the support provided aligns with the schools’ specific needs, maximizing the impact and creating a sustainable foundation for future growth and development. The NCCU’s commitment to this initiative reflects its broader vision of community development and its belief in the power of education to transform lives.
