Prime Minister Drew and Chairman Holness Address CARICOM Closing Press Conference
The 49th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), held in Montego Bay, Jamaica, concluded on July 8, 2025, with a press conference addressed by CARICOM Chairman and Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness, and Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Terrance Drew. The conference served as a platform to disseminate the key outcomes of the meeting, highlighting the collective decisions and future strategies adopted by CARICOM leaders. Prime Minister Drew’s participation underscored the shared commitment of member states to address critical regional and global issues, including climate change, South-South cooperation, and intra-regional trade. His pronouncements reflected the urgency and importance of collaborative action within the Caribbean community and with international partners.
Prime Minister Drew’s intervention at the press conference focused heavily on the pressing issue of climate change. He reiterated CARICOM’s unwavering stance on demanding climate justice for the region’s vulnerable populations, who are disproportionately affected by the adverse impacts of a changing climate. He emphasized the need for a more equitable and responsible approach from global partners in addressing the climate crisis, underscoring the shared responsibility of developed nations to support climate mitigation and adaptation efforts in vulnerable regions like the Caribbean. This call for climate justice reflects the ongoing advocacy by CARICOM for greater financial and technical assistance from developed countries to help SIDS (Small Island Developing States) build resilience against the escalating impacts of climate change, including rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and threats to biodiversity.
Further emphasizing the importance of international partnerships, Dr. Drew highlighted the growing significance of South-South cooperation and trade, referencing his recent engagements with the Government of Nigeria and the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) as prime examples of CARICOM’s expanding relationship with Africa. This focus on deepening economic and cultural ties with the African continent signifies a strategic move to diversify partnerships and explore opportunities for mutual growth and development. The burgeoning relationship between CARICOM and Africa holds the potential to unlock significant trade and investment opportunities, foster cultural exchange, and strengthen political alliances based on shared historical experiences and developmental aspirations. This South-South cooperation presents a viable pathway towards achieving sustainable development goals and reducing reliance on traditional North-South development models.
The Prime Minister’s emphasis on the relationship with Africa underscores the potential for strengthening trade, investment, and cultural exchanges between the two regions. This strategic partnership aims to diversify economic opportunities for CARICOM member states, promote cultural understanding, and foster solidarity in addressing shared challenges. By leveraging the resources and expertise of both regions, this collaboration can contribute to achieving sustainable development goals and fostering greater self-reliance. This approach also represents a shift towards a more balanced global partnership landscape, empowering developing regions to collaborate and drive their own development agendas.
Looking towards the future of CARICOM, Prime Minister Drew formally extended an invitation to all member states and stakeholders to attend the next CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting, scheduled to be hosted by St. Kitts and Nevis from February 25–27, 2027. This upcoming meeting, which will take place during Dr. Drew’s tenure as Chair of the Community, will provide another crucial opportunity for regional leaders to address pressing issues, strategize for collective progress, and strengthen the bonds of Caribbean integration. The hosting of this significant event by St. Kitts and Nevis underscores the nation’s commitment to regional leadership and its active role in shaping the future of the Caribbean community.
The 49th CARICOM summit served as a vital platform for reaffirming the shared commitment of member states to address pressing regional and global challenges. Prime Minister Drew’s pronouncements on climate change, South-South cooperation, and the upcoming CARICOM Heads of Government meeting in St. Kitts and Nevis underscore the importance of collective action, strategic partnerships, and regional solidarity in navigating the complex landscape of global development. The outcomes of this meeting lay the groundwork for continued collaboration and pave the way for a more resilient and prosperous future for the Caribbean Community.
