Prime Minister Drew Underscores Legacy and Future at National Heroes Day Ceremony
The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, on September 16th, 2025, solemnly marked its annual National Heroes Day, a day dedicated to honoring the five individuals who shaped the nation’s destiny. Against the backdrop of the 42nd Independence Anniversary, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew led the commemorative wreath-laying ceremony at the National Heroes Park in Basseterre, urging citizens to reflect on the sacrifices and unwavering resolve of their National Heroes. He emphasized the importance of drawing inspiration from their legacy to build a future that is both prosperous and sustainable for all Kittitians and Nevisians.
Dr. Drew’s address resonated with the theme of Independence 42, “Perpetual Progress – A Sustainable Future in View.” He pointed out that the struggles of the National Heroes extended beyond political arenas, encompassing the everyday lives of ordinary citizens who yearned for freedom and justice. Their fight was not confined to parliament chambers and conferences, but resonated in the fields, villages, and classrooms where the seeds of independence were sown. The Prime Minister underscored the need to recognize and honor the broad spectrum of contributions that paved the path to nationhood.
The Prime Minister drew a parallel between the challenges of the past and the present, stating that the modern struggle is not against colonial oppression but for the creation of a secure and sustainable future. This future, he articulated, should be one where opportunities abound for all, where young people are empowered, where workers earn fair wages, where entrepreneurs can flourish, and where families can thrive in a supportive environment. He emphasized that true sustainability transcends mere environmental concerns, encompassing the well-being and prosperity of the nation’s people.
Dr. Drew’s call to action focused on the importance of embodying the values demonstrated by the National Heroes: service, courage, and unwavering patriotism. He urged citizens to actively contribute to nation-building, to demonstrate courage in the face of adversity, and to cultivate a deep love for their country, echoing the very principles upon which St. Kitts and Nevis gained its independence. This call to action was not just a commemorative gesture but a challenge to carry forward the torch of progress and ensure a brighter future for generations to come.
The ceremony culminated in a poignant tribute to the five National Heroes: Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, Sir Caleb Azariah Paul Southwell, Sir Joseph Nathaniel France, Sir Simeon Daniel, and the Rt. Excellent Sir Kennedy Alphonse Simmonds. The laying of wreaths symbolized the enduring respect and gratitude for their invaluable contributions to the nation’s independence and development. Their sacrifices and unwavering dedication laid the foundation for the freedoms and opportunities enjoyed by the citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis today.
The 42nd Independence Anniversary, intertwined with the National Heroes Day commemoration, served as a profound reminder of the nation’s journey. From the struggles against colonialism to the ongoing pursuit of a sustainable future, the event underscored the importance of unity, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to national progress. The Prime Minister’s message resonated deeply, calling upon all citizens to contribute to the ongoing narrative of progress and to ensure that the legacy of the National Heroes continues to inspire generations to come. It was a day of reflection, remembrance, and renewed dedication to the principles that define St. Kitts and Nevis as a sovereign nation.
