Prime Minister’s Office Launches Project L.E.A.D. to Cultivate Future Leaders

Project LEAD, an acronym for Leadership, Engagement, Aspiration, and Development, is a groundbreaking six-week internship program initiated by the Prime Minister’s Office in Basseterre, Saint Kitts. This inaugural program aimed to bridge the gap between young people and the inner workings of government, providing high school and first-year college students with invaluable hands-on experience in governance, civic engagement, and leadership development. Conceived by Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, the program reflects his vision to empower the next generation of leaders by offering them direct exposure to the machinery of government and fostering a deeper understanding of its complexities. The program’s core objective is to demystify the governmental process, going beyond the surface-level observations students typically glean from news reports or school visits by ministers.

The first cohort of Project LEAD comprised seven interns strategically placed across various government ministries and departments. These placements included the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of National Security, Customs, the St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service (SKNIS), and the Human Resources Department within the Prime Minister’s Office. This diverse range of placements exposed the interns to a broad spectrum of governmental functions and responsibilities. Crucially, the internship assignments were personalized to align with each student’s individual career aspirations. For example, aspiring medical professionals were assigned to the hospital, while those interested in national security gained experience with the Citizen Security Secretariat and the Ministry of National Security.
