Sailing Coaching Course Completed

The St. Kitts and Nevis Sailing Association (SKNSA) marked a significant milestone in July 2025 with the successful completion of the World Sailing Level 1 Olympic Solidarity Technical Coaching Course. This intensive seven-day program, split between the Nevis Aquatic and Sailing Centre (NASC) and the St. Kitts Yacht Club (SKYC), empowered thirteen aspiring sailing instructors with essential skills and knowledge. The course encompassed a range of crucial topics, from fundamental sailing techniques and powerboat operation to risk assessment and training schedule planning. Furthermore, the program incorporated the IOC’s Safeguarding Athletes from Harassment and Abuse course, ensuring a comprehensive approach to coaching development. The closing ceremony, held at the St. Kitts Yacht Club, served as a celebration of the participants’ dedication and the collaborative efforts that made the course possible. The event was punctuated by speeches that highlighted the importance of the initiative for the future of sailing in St. Kitts and Nevis.

The SKNSA President, Mr. Nicholas Dupre, expressed his pride in the newly certified cohort of instructors, noting their demonstrable growth in both technical prowess and leadership abilities. He expressed anticipation for the positive impact these instructors will have on upcoming sailing camps and the broader sailing community. This sentiment was echoed by World Sailing Course Director, Mr. Hernan Vila Mosso, who lauded the participants’ hard work and emphasized the invaluable life lessons learned through sports, particularly the formation of strong bonds and friendships. He underlined the transformative power of education in youth development, positioning sailing as a vehicle for personal growth and connection.

Mr. Dennis Knight, President of the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee (SKNOC), further reinforced the significance of the course, highlighting the broader values instilled through sports participation. While acknowledging the importance of achieving medals and accolades, he stressed the equally valuable development of character, relationships, and connections fostered within the sporting environment. He praised SKNSA for their proactive approach to coaching development and acknowledged the unique challenges and triumphs faced by sailors, who often achieve remarkable growth without the constant spotlight of large audiences. He reiterated the SKNOC’s unwavering commitment to supporting sailing, both financially and morally, underscoring the belief in the sport’s potential to positively impact the federation.

Participant Abhijith Srinivasan delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to Mr. Vila Mosso for his engaging and innovative teaching methods. Srinivasan described the course as transformative, not just for its technical instruction, but for the valuable life skills imparted. He praised the course’s ability to be both fun and engaging, emphasizing its impact beyond the realm of sailing. This sentiment captures the essence of the program’s success, showcasing its potential to shape not only skilled sailors but also well-rounded individuals.

The success of the World Sailing Level 1 Olympic Solidarity Technical Coaching Course was a testament to the collective effort of numerous individuals and organizations. The SKNSA Board of Directors played a pivotal role in organizing the event, demonstrating their dedication to advancing sailing within the federation. Crucial support came from Olympic Solidarity and the SKNOC, whose sponsorship made this significant coaching development initiative possible. The presence and ongoing support of SKNOC President Mr. Dennis Knight, Vice President Ms. Jennifer Nero, and Secretary General Mr. Glenville Jeffers further underscored the commitment of the Olympic Committee to the growth of sailing.

Beyond the organizational support, several individuals contributed to the smooth execution and enriching experience of the course. Ms. Myrtrice Sedam provided the opening invocation, setting a positive tone for the program, while Mr. Daryl Grant expertly documented the event through captivating photography. The Bistro ensured participants were well-nourished with delicious meals throughout the St. Kitts portion of the course. Danielle Connor, Chairperson of NASC, and Lizbeth Burrell, Secretary of SKNSA, played vital roles in coordinating the logistical aspects of the program, ensuring a seamless experience for all involved. Mr. Nickhail Rogers, Commodore of SKYC, served as the Master of Ceremonies for the closing event, adding a touch of celebratory flair with music and entertainment. The continued support of Islander Water Sports and the contribution of a podium by Mr. Darren Thompson of the Royal St. Kitts Hotel rounded out the collaborative effort, demonstrating the community’s shared investment in the development of sailing.
