Senator Phillip Pledges Strengthened Partnerships to Expand Upon 90-Day Anti-Violence and Crime Campaign Success

The 90-Day Campaign Against Violence and Crime, initiated in St. Kitts and Nevis in September 2024, has yielded significant positive outcomes, setting the stage for a sustained and comprehensive approach to citizen security. The campaign, characterized by robust collaboration among public, private, and civil society stakeholders, delved into the root causes of crime, enabling the development of evidence-based strategies aimed at fostering long-term safety and security. The success of this intensive effort has paved the way for a transition to “Beyond the 90-Days,” a phase that promises to build upon the foundation laid and solidify the gains achieved.

The government, through the Citizen Security Secretariat, is committed to maintaining the “whole-of-society approach” that proved instrumental in the campaign’s success. This approach recognizes that addressing crime effectively requires a collective effort, bringing together diverse perspectives and resources to tackle the issue from multiple angles. The emphasis on partnerships underscores the understanding that sustainable solutions emerge from collaborative engagement, leveraging the strengths and expertise of various stakeholders, including government agencies, community organizations, and individuals. This collaborative spirit fosters a sense of shared responsibility and ownership in creating safer communities.

Central to the “Beyond the 90-Days” initiative is the reconstruction of “communities of care and compassion.” This signifies a shift towards re-establishing social cohesion and strengthening the bonds that bind communities together. By fostering environments of mutual support and understanding, the aim is to create a social fabric that discourages criminal activity and promotes positive social behavior. This approach emphasizes not only addressing the immediate symptoms of crime but also cultivating a culture of peace and respect that prevents crime from taking root in the first place.

The concept of citizen security takes center stage in the government’s long-term strategy. It goes beyond the traditional focus on national security, which primarily emphasizes law enforcement and punishment, to encompass the broader well-being and security of individuals. This holistic perspective recognizes that true security is not just about protecting people from harm but also about creating an environment where they feel safe, supported, and empowered. It underscores the importance of addressing social and economic factors that contribute to crime, such as poverty, inequality, and lack of opportunity.

The Ministry of Social Development and Gender Affairs, Youth Empowerment, Ageing and Disabilities is playing a crucial role in advancing the citizen security agenda. By focusing on programs and interventions related to human and social development, the ministry aims to address the underlying vulnerabilities that can lead to criminal behavior. This includes initiatives that promote education, skills development, employment opportunities, and social support services. The ministry’s commitment to these areas reflects the understanding that investing in people and communities is essential for building a safer and more prosperous society.

Moving forward, the government plans to continue engaging meaningfully with all stakeholders, furthering the collaborative approach that proved so effective during the 90-Day Campaign. These partnerships will span various sectors, including inter-ministerial collaborations, as well as engagements with community organizations, individuals, and agencies. This sustained engagement will ensure that diverse perspectives are considered in developing and implementing crime prevention strategies. The focus on partnerships reflects a belief that collective action is the most effective way to address the complex challenges of crime and build safer communities for all. The government’s commitment to this “whole-of-society” approach promises a future where citizen security is not just a goal but a lived reality for all residents of St. Kitts and Nevis.
