St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards Promotes National Standardization Strategy.

The St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards (SKNBS) orchestrated a pivotal National Standardisation Strategy (NSS) Development Session on March 13, 2025, at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, bringing together key stakeholders to chart a course for enhanced quality infrastructure and economic growth. The session, themed “Building Awareness, Confirming Research Findings, and Setting Standards Priorities,” emphasized the critical need for aligning national standards with regional and international benchmarks, particularly in sectors vital to the nation’s development, such as food security, construction, and fisheries. This strategic alignment aims to bolster economic efficiency, ensure quality assurance, and facilitate seamless integration into the global marketplace. The event served as a platform to underscore the importance of a robust standardisation framework as a cornerstone of sustainable economic development.

Mrs. Sharonmae Smith-Walker, CEO of CARICOM’s Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ), emphasized the crucial role of the NSS in aligning St. Kitts and Nevis’ standards with regional frameworks. This harmonization, she noted, is essential not only for enhancing trade and market access within the CARICOM region but also for ensuring consistent quality across borders, thereby fostering consumer confidence and promoting regional economic integration. Mr. Aka Kouassi, Chief Technical Advisor at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), further reinforced the significance of the NSS within the broader context of the National Quality Infrastructure (NQI). The session also received strong governmental endorsement, with the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas, Minister of Trade, Industry, and Consumer Affairs, delivering the keynote address. Dr. Douglas reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to establishing St. Kitts and Nevis as a “sustainable island state,” highlighting the NSS as a crucial “blueprint for sustainable growth, innovation, and global integration.” He lauded the collaborative efforts and support provided by key partners, including CROSQ, UNIDO, and the European Union under the ACP Quality Infrastructure Programme, recognizing their invaluable contributions to strengthening the nation’s standardisation framework and fostering its economic resilience.
