Superintendent Carty Reports 11% Crime Reduction in Nevis Due to Improved Detection Rates
The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) District C, responsible for Nevis, reported a commendable 11% decrease in reported crimes in 2024. Superintendent Alonzo Carty, Divisional Commander, unveiled these positive statistics during the Division’s New Year’s Service. The total number of reported crimes in 2024 stood at 171, down from 192 in 2023. Furthermore, the detection rate saw a slight improvement, rising to 48% in 2024 from 46% the previous year. This improvement translates to 82 solved cases out of the 171 reported in 2024, compared to 89 solved cases out of 192 in 2023. These figures demonstrate the RSCNPF’s dedication to ensuring the safety and security of Nevis.
While acknowledging the persistent challenges posed by crimes such as larcenies, malicious damage, and break-ins, Superintendent Carty expressed satisfaction with the progress made. He highlighted the successful apprehension of offenders and their subsequent incarceration as evidence of the Division’s effective crime-fighting strategies. The removal of three illegal firearms and a significant quantity of ammunition from the streets of Nevis further underscored the Division’s commitment to proactive policing and reducing the potential for violent crime. These accomplishments reflect the dedication and hard work of the officers and contribute to a safer environment for the residents of Nevis.
Beyond addressing reported crimes, the Nevis Division focused on community engagement and proactive policing initiatives. Superintendent Carty emphasized the importance of the “Community Policing” initiative, which aims to understand community needs and build stronger relationships between the police and the public. This strategy fosters trust and cooperation, crucial elements in effectively addressing crime and maintaining order. By engaging with the community, the police can better understand local concerns and tailor their approaches to crime prevention and response.
The Division also prioritized collaboration with other agencies, adopting a multi-pronged approach to crime fighting. Recognizing that effective crime prevention often requires a collaborative effort, the RSCNPF has actively sought partnerships to enhance their capabilities. This collaborative approach allows for a more comprehensive and effective response to crime, encompassing various perspectives and resources. By working together with other stakeholders, the Nevis Division strengthens its capacity to prevent crime and maintain a secure environment.
Further strengthening their community engagement efforts, the Division actively pursued the School Liaison Officer Programme. This program fosters positive relationships between law enforcement and students at both primary and secondary school levels. These interactions aim to build trust, educate young people about the role of the police, and promote positive interactions with law enforcement. By cultivating these relationships early on, the RSCNPF hopes to foster a sense of community and cooperation between law enforcement and the younger generation. This proactive engagement contributes to building a safer and more cohesive community.
Superintendent Carty attributed the Division’s success to the collective efforts of his colleagues and partners. He expressed sincere gratitude to the Inspectors, the various departments within the Division – including the Traffic Department, Task Force, Criminal Investigation Department, out-stations, Beat and Patrol Unit, Forensic Services Unit, Divisional office, Local Intelligence Office, Criminal Records Office, Special Victims Unit, and the Court and Process Department – and their partners, the St. Kitts and Nevis Defense Force. This acknowledgement highlights the importance of teamwork and collaboration in achieving the Division’s goals. The combined efforts of these dedicated individuals contributed significantly to the reduction in crime and the overall improvement in safety and security on Nevis. The RSCNPF remains committed to adapting its strategies and continuing its work towards maintaining a safe and secure environment for all residents of Nevis in 2025 and beyond.
