TDC Primary Schools’ Cricket Tournament Commences
The ET Willet Park in Nevis served as the backdrop for a momentous occasion on Monday, June 23rd, marking the commencement of the Runako Morton/TDC-sponsored Primary Schools Cricket Tournament. This year’s tournament, aptly themed “Pomp and pageantry, Runako Morton TDC Primary Schools’ cricket 30”, commemorated three decades of unwavering sponsorship by the TDC Group of Companies, a testament to their enduring commitment to youth development and the sport of cricket within the Nevisian community. The opening ceremony, presided over by former West Indies cricketer Carl Tuckett, resonated with an air of celebration and anticipation for the upcoming cricketing action. The presence of dignitaries, educators, and sporting officials underscored the significance of the tournament within the island’s sporting and educational landscape.
The ceremony featured a series of addresses that highlighted the multifaceted importance of the tournament. Director of Sports, Aljay Newton, drew a powerful analogy, comparing TDC’s thirty years of sponsorship to a remarkable triple century in cricket, emphasizing the monumental impact of their sustained support. Principal Education Officer, Londa Browne, addressed the young cricketers directly, encouraging them to embrace the core values of sportsmanship, kindness, and honesty, recognizing the tournament as a platform for character development alongside cricketing prowess. Minister of Sports, Hon. Troy Liburd, offered a stirring reminder of Nevis’s rich cricketing heritage, a lineage that has produced seven West Indies players. Eight primary schools from across Nevis are vying for the coveted title this year. The defending champions, Ivor Walters Primary, will be facing stiff competition from VOJN Primary, Charlestown Primary, Joycelyn Liburd Primary, St. Thomas’ Primary, Elizabeth Pemberton Primary, Maude Cross Preparatory, and St. James’ Primary. Each team brings its unique strengths and aspirations to the tournament, promising a captivating display of cricketing talent and strategic gameplay. The diverse representation of schools ensures a vibrant and competitive atmosphere, fostering camaraderie and healthy rivalry among the young cricketers.
The tournament schedule kicked off with two exciting matches on Wednesday, March 25th. In the morning session, St. James’ Primary faced the formidable Ivor Walters Primary, a clash between seasoned champions and aspiring contenders. The afternoon match saw Maude Cross Preparatory taking on Joycelyn Liburd Primary, another encounter poised to showcase the emerging talent within Nevisian cricket. The scheduling of these matches allows for ample viewing opportunities, enabling the community to witness the blossoming skills of these young athletes and support their respective schools.
