Ten Inmates Graduate from Substance Use Recovery Program at Nevis Prison Farm

The National Council on Drug Abuse Prevention Secretariat celebrated a milestone in its ongoing commitment to rehabilitation and community well-being with the successful completion of the Stages of Change Substance Use Program at the Nevis Prison Farm. Ten inmates marked the culmination of their transformative journey with a graduation ceremony on June 11, 2025, receiving certificates that symbolize their dedication to personal growth and healthier life choices. This achievement underscores the power of targeted intervention programs within correctional settings to facilitate positive change and empower individuals to break free from the cycle of substance misuse.

The intensive program, spanning from March 18 to June 11, 2025, was meticulously designed to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and self-awareness necessary to navigate the complexities of addiction and make informed decisions about their future. Facilitated by Drug Prevention Officer Ishelle Huggins and Drug Misuse Intervention Officer Nigenda Walters, the program comprised an initial sensitization session followed by eight in-depth group sessions. These sessions delved into critical areas, including the stages of behavioral change, dispelling myths and misconceptions surrounding substance use, reinforcing personal values, fostering healthy relationships, and developing essential coping mechanisms such as self-control and goal setting.
