Times Caribbean Announces 2025 Sonia Boddie Promising Youth Leadership Scholarship Recipients
Sonia Boddie-Thompson Continues Legacy of Educational Empowerment in Tabernacle Village
The vibrant community of Tabernacle Village in St. Kitts was once again graced by the generosity of Mrs. Sonia Boddie-Thompson, a distinguished diplomat and former student of the village’s primary school. On May 28th, 2025, the 12th annual Sonia Boddie Promising Youth Leader Scholarship was awarded to two deserving Grade six students, Princess Richards and Nikolas Carey, marking another chapter in Boddie-Thompson’s ongoing commitment to fostering educational opportunities for the youth of her hometown.
This year’s scholarship recipients are the first to benefit from an increased financial award of $600 Eastern Caribbean Dollars, a boost from the previous $500. This enhancement aims to further alleviate the financial burden associated with transitioning to secondary school, covering essential expenses such as uniforms and school supplies. The scholarship, established twelve years ago, has now supported a total of 34 students, providing a crucial stepping stone towards their academic pursuits.
Beyond the immediate financial assistance, the scholarship embodies Boddie-Thompson’s deep-rooted belief in empowering the youth of Tabernacle Village. She sees education as a catalyst for personal growth and societal advancement, providing young people with the tools and resources they need to pursue their dreams and contribute meaningfully to their community. This commitment reflects not only her dedication to her hometown but also her broader philosophy of giving back and uplifting others.
Adding another dimension to her philanthropic endeavors, Boddie-Thompson has introduced a new component to the scholarship program. Recognizing the challenges faced by young people entering the workforce, she now provides funding for past Sonia Boddie Promising Youth Leader Scholars transitioning from secondary school or college to participate in Job Readiness Workshops. These workshops are designed to equip them with essential skills, knowledge, and professional etiquette to navigate the job market effectively and confidently embark on their chosen career paths.
The impact of Boddie-Thompson’s generosity resonated deeply within the Edgar T. Morris Primary School community. Principal Dale Phipps expressed profound gratitude for her unwavering support, recognizing the transformative effect the scholarship has on the lives of the students. Boddie-Thompson’s commitment serves as a powerful example of the positive impact individuals can have on their communities, inspiring hope and creating opportunities for future generations.
The story of Sonia Boddie-Thompson is one of remarkable achievement and unwavering dedication to her community. A 1996 valedictorian of the Tabernacle Primary School, now renamed the Edgar T. Morris Primary School, she herself has been the recipient of numerous scholarships throughout her academic journey. These opportunities, provided by both the private sector and international organizations, propelled her towards a distinguished career in diplomacy. Currently serving as Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of St. Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations in New York City, she stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and a role model for the students she supports. Through her ongoing commitment to the Sonia Boddie Promising Youth Leader Scholarship, she ensures that other young people from her village have the chance to realize their full potential, contributing to the continued growth and prosperity of Tabernacle Village and beyond. Her story is a beacon of hope and inspiration, demonstrating the profound impact of investing in education and empowering future generations. The expansion of the scholarship to include job readiness training further underscores her commitment to providing holistic support, ensuring that young people are not only academically prepared but also equipped with the practical skills necessary to thrive in the professional world. Boddie-Thompson’s actions exemplify the spirit of community building and the importance of creating a supportive environment for young people to flourish.
