Commencement of Cash Grant Disbursements in Guyana, with Pre-Christmas Distribution Limited.

Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, the General Secretary of Guyana’s People’s Progressive Party (PPP), announced the imminent distribution of cash grants to Guyanese citizens in Regions One, Eight, and Four. Each citizen will receive GYD $100,000, equivalent to approximately USD $478. This initiative is part of a broader nationwide program aiming to provide financial assistance to the population. The distribution will commence in Region One, followed by Region Eight, and then Region Four. Dr. Jagdeo emphasized the government’s commitment to a smooth and efficient process, urging patience from the public as they finalize preparations for distribution. The government anticipates having all checks ready within the next few weeks, with distribution to begin immediately after the registration process concludes in each respective region.

Central to the cash grant initiative is a comprehensive nationwide registration process, designed to create a national database for more streamlined future distributions. This database will serve as a vital tool for the government, ensuring accurate and efficient disbursement of funds in subsequent rounds of the program. The government projects completion of the registration process within five months. This registration drive has already commenced in several regions, with residents of Region Nine having begun to receive their grants. This phased approach allows the government to manage the logistical complexities of the program effectively, ensuring all eligible citizens are included.

The government expects to reach approximately 300,000 citizens with these cash grants by the end of 2024. The remaining eligible population will receive their grants in January 2025 and beyond. Dr. Jagdeo underscored the government’s commitment to inclusivity, assuring that mechanisms are in place to accommodate individuals who might have missed the initial registration period, including those facing mobility challenges or other circumstances preventing them from visiting registration centers. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that no eligible citizen is inadvertently excluded from the program.

The cash grant program has faced criticism from opposition parties, with accusations ranging from the grant amount being inadequate for public servants to concerns about potential inflationary effects. Dr. Jagdeo addressed these criticisms directly, dismissing them as attempts to sow confusion and undermine the program’s credibility. He highlighted the inherent contradiction in the opposition’s stance, pointing out their previous criticisms of the existing voter’s list while simultaneously advocating for its use in the grant distribution process. He characterized this as an attempt to create confusion and cast doubt on the integrity of the initiative.

Dr. Jagdeo also recalled prior opposition claims that the registration process was a disguised attempt to gather data for the 2025 elections – a claim he noted was met with skepticism even within their own support base. He reiterated the government’s commitment to transparency and the primary purpose of the registration process: to ensure accurate and efficient disbursement of the cash grants. He challenged the legitimacy of these ongoing criticisms, labeling them as “baseless arguments” that are consistently repeated. This underlines the government’s resolve to proceed with the program despite the opposition’s objections.

The total value of the cash grant initiative is estimated at GYD $60 billion, representing a significant investment in the Guyanese population. This comprehensive program signifies the government’s commitment to providing direct financial assistance to its citizens. The establishment of a national database through the registration process not only facilitates the current distribution but also lays the groundwork for more efficient and streamlined social assistance programs in the future. This investment reflects a long-term vision for enhancing the socio-economic well-being of the Guyanese people.
