Enhanced Service Delivery by the Ministry of Commerce (Southern Division) in St. Lucia
The Ministry of Commerce, Manufacturing, Business Development, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs in St. Lucia is expanding its reach with the inauguration of a new southern division in Vieux Fort. Scheduled to open on February 26th, 2025, this strategically located office within the Uptown Business Centre on New Dock Road aims to bridge the geographical gap and enhance accessibility to vital government services for businesses and consumers in the southern part of the island and its surrounding areas. This expansion is a testament to the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to fostering economic growth and providing essential support to the business community.
This new division will function as a mirror image of the Ministry’s main office in Castries, offering a comprehensive suite of services to cater to the diverse needs of businesses, both large and small. Small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs will have access to the same level of support and advisory services currently provided by the Small Business Development Centre in the north. These include crucial assistance with business plan development, online business registration, access to concessions and training opportunities, guidance on financial planning, securing capital, navigating marketing strategies, and ensuring regulatory compliance. This localized support will empower southern businesses to flourish and contribute to the region’s economic prosperity.
Larger businesses will also benefit significantly from the new division, gaining access to streamlined services such as the certification of forms and Minister’s Licences, which are essential for the efficient clearance of goods. This localized service delivery will reduce delays and enhance operational efficiency for established businesses in the south, fostering a more conducive environment for growth and expansion.
Beyond business support, the southern division will also play a vital role in consumer protection. Consumers in the south will now have a more convenient and accessible platform for lodging complaints and reporting irregularities in the pricing and quality of goods sold in the local market. With a dedicated officer assigned to the region, the Consumer Affairs Department can proactively monitor price-controlled goods and conduct thorough investigations into consumer complaints, ensuring fair trading practices and consumer rights protection.
The new facility also extends its support to cooperatives, providing essential information and guidance on cooperative formation and registration. This will streamline the process for individuals and groups interested in establishing cooperatives, fostering a more collaborative and community-driven economic model in the southern region. Furthermore, the division provides a valuable resource for existing cooperatives, offering advice and support to ensure their continued success.
The southern division office is designed not just as a service centre but also as a collaborative hub for the business community. The inclusion of a meeting room and a spacious rooftop terrace provides an ideal venue for business-related activities. Registered business owners can utilize the meeting room for interviews, presentations, consultations, and business meetings, while the rooftop terrace offers an exceptional space for hosting business outreach initiatives and networking events. This fosters a sense of community and encourages collaboration among businesses in the southern region. Commerce Minister Emma Hippolyte has expressed enthusiasm about this initiative, highlighting its importance in addressing the needs of the southern business community and fostering economic revitalization. The Ministry’s responsiveness to the concerns of the southern parliamentary representative and the business community signifies a collaborative approach to economic development, paving the way for renewed growth and prosperity in the region. The opening of the southern division is a significant investment in the future of St. Lucia’s south, providing a platform for economic empowerment and fostering a stronger connection between the government and the business community.
