The Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC) in St. Lucia is set to host its inaugural Writers in the Spotlight: Book and Literary Fair on January 24, 2024. This event, a cornerstone of the college’s Nobel Laureate Festival celebrations, will showcase the vibrant literary landscape of St. Lucia, featuring authors both from the island and its diaspora. The fair promises to be a celebration of St. Lucian literary heritage, bringing together authors, readers, and the wider community in a unique and engaging experience.

Organized by the Hunter J. François Library at SALCC, the book fair is expected to feature over 35 authors, highlighting the college’s commitment to nurturing intellectual and creative pursuits. The event is a fitting tribute to Hunter J. François, a prominent figure in St. Lucian education and governance, whose legacy continues to inspire the institution. The day-long event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., promises a diverse range of activities for attendees of all ages. Author showcases will provide opportunities to meet and interact with St. Lucian writers, listen to live readings, and discover unpublished works. Vendor booths will offer a selection of books, stationery, and other literary-themed items, while children’s activities, including book-themed games and scavenger hunts, will ensure a fun and engaging experience for younger visitors. The fair will also feature a dedicated section showcasing the works of St. Lucia’s Nobel Laureates, Sir Derek Walcott and Sir Arthur Lewis, celebrating their profound contributions to literature and economics, respectively.

A highlight of the Writers in the Spotlight event is the special Author Talks session featuring His Excellency Dr. Didacus Jules, a distinguished educator and scholar. Dr. Jules will present his latest book, “Education for Uncertainty,” followed by a lecture exploring the evolving role of education in an era of increasing complexity and rapid change. His presence adds significant weight to the event, given his extensive experience and thought leadership in the field of education and his unwavering dedication to regional development.
