Premier Brantley Applauds Geothermal Energy Breakthrough
Premier of Nevis and Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Mark Brantley, has praised Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew and his administration for successfully securing the necessary funding to advance geothermal energy in St. Kitts and Nevis.
Speaking on ZIZ’s The Edge, Brantley acknowledged that while the pursuit of geothermal energy has spanned decades, the government’s commitment has finally moved the project forward in a meaningful way.
“This funding marks a historic step,” he stated. “With US$20 million from the Saudi Fund for Development and US$17 million from the Caribbean Development Bank, we now have what we need to begin drilling production wells—one of the most critical and financially risky stages.”
Brantley emphasized that this long-awaited breakthrough would drive economic transformation. “For the first time, we’re in a position to harness a renewable resource that could reduce our dependence on tourism and Citizenship by Investment,” he said.
The potential benefits go beyond energy. Brantley highlighted geothermal’s role in making desalination more affordable, addressing water security, and supporting agriculture.
“Cheaper energy means cheaper water, better conditions for farmers, and improved quality of life for everyone,” he noted.
Brantley credited Prime Minister Drew’s leadership for ensuring the country is on track to becoming a leader in renewable energy. “This is a true game-changer,” he said.
With funding in place and drilling preparations underway, the St. Kitts and Nevis government, in partnership with international stakeholders, is taking a decisive step towards a greener, more self-sufficient future.
