Trinidad and Tobago Women Secure Another Super50 Cup Victory

The Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) women’s cricket team notched their third consecutive victory in the CG United Women’s Super50 Cup, defeating the previously undefeated Barbados by five wickets at St Paul’s Sporting Complex in St Kitts. Barbados, after being put in to bat, struggled significantly, mustering a meager total of 76 runs. Their innings was propped up primarily by Kycia Knight (20) and Kyshona Knight (23), with no other batter reaching double figures. The T&T bowling attack displayed remarkable efficiency, sharing the wickets amongst themselves. Youngster Samara Ramnath and veteran Anisa Mohammed spearheaded the demolition, each claiming three wickets for 13 and 12 runs, respectively. Steffie Soogrim and Karishma Ramharack further contributed to the Barbados downfall, each securing two wickets. This comprehensive bowling performance laid the foundation for T&T’s eventual victory.

Chasing a modest target of 77, T&T encountered some unexpected challenges on a seemingly difficult batting surface. While they reached the target in 22 overs, losing five wickets in the process, the chase was far from comfortable. Openers Shunelle Sawh (10 off 29 balls) and Djenaba Joseph (27 not out off 54 balls) found it tough to score freely. Britney Cooper, a seasoned campaigner, also struggled, managing 17 runs off 31 deliveries. A middle-order wobble saw T&T lose four wickets for just 17 runs, briefly adding some tension to the chase. However, Joseph remained steadfast, anchoring the innings and guiding her team to a hard-fought victory.

This win propelled T&T to the summit of the Super50 Cup standings, accumulating a point more than second-placed Guyana and relegating Barbados to third. T&T’s next match against Guyana at Warner Park becomes crucial, with a victory guaranteeing them a spot in the final. The top two teams at the end of the group stage will contest the final, also at Warner Park, two days later.

Elsewhere in the tournament, Guyana registered a comfortable seven-wicket victory over the Windward Islands. Batting first, the Windward Islands were bowled out for 97, with Plaffiana Millington, Cherry-Ann Fraser, and Ashmini Munisar sharing the spoils with three, two, and two wickets respectively. Guyana chased down the target with ease, reaching 101 for the loss of just three wickets in 25 overs. Realeanna Grimmond top-scored with an unbeaten 48, ably supported by Shabika Gajnabi’s unbeaten 32. Selena Ross was the pick of the Windward Islands bowlers, picking up two wickets.

In a thrilling encounter at Warner Park, the Leeward Islands pulled off a stunning upset against defending champions Jamaica, securing a nail-biting one-wicket victory. Jamaica posted a challenging total of 253 for 9 in their allotted 50 overs. Rashada Williams led the charge with a superb 86, followed by Abigail Bryce’s 72 and Jodian Morgan’s 35. Kimberly Anthony was the standout bowler for the Leeward Islands, bagging an impressive five-wicket haul for 34 runs. Amanda Edwards and Jahzara Claxton chipped in with two wickets each.

The Leeward Islands responded valiantly, chasing down the daunting target with just three balls to spare. Amanda Edwards, contributing significantly with both bat and ball, played a magnificent innings of 88. Kimberly Anthony (37) and Jahzara Claxton (34) also made valuable contributions with the bat, ensuring a memorable win for their team. Chedean Nation and Celina Whyte were the most successful bowlers for Jamaica, each claiming two wickets. This upset win underscored the competitive nature of the tournament and the potential for unexpected outcomes.

These results have set the stage for an exciting climax to the group stage of the CG United Women’s Super50 Cup. The final match between T&T and Guyana promises to be a closely contested affair, with both teams vying for a place in the final. The Leeward Islands’ victory over Jamaica injected an element of unpredictability into the tournament, demonstrating that any team is capable of causing an upset on their day. The performances of individual players like Rashada Williams, Abigail Bryce, Kimberly Anthony, Amanda Edwards, and Realeanna Grimmond have added further excitement and underscored the depth of talent on display in the tournament.
