Wavell Hinds Secures Seventh Term as WIPA President

The West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA), the representative body for West Indian cricketers, convened its annual general meeting (AGM) on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort. This year’s AGM was strategically scheduled to coincide with the Women’s Super 50 Cup, facilitating the participation of female cricketers and providing them with a platform to engage with the association’s activities and achievements. The meeting culminated in the unanimous re-election of the incumbent executive team, reaffirming the membership’s confidence in their leadership and setting the stage for continued advocacy and representation of player interests until 2027.

A key outcome of the AGM was the re-election of Wavell Hinds for his seventh consecutive term as WIPA president. Hinds, who has served as president since 2011, ran unopposed, underscoring the widespread support he enjoys amongst the player membership. His extensive tenure reflects his commitment to player welfare and his effectiveness in navigating the complex landscape of professional cricket. Hinds’ leadership will be complemented by the continued service of Nixon McLean as vice-president, Wayne Lewis as honorary secretary, Liam Sebastien as assistant secretary, and Ridley Jacobs as treasurer. This experienced team provides WIPA with a solid foundation to address the evolving challenges and opportunities facing West Indian cricketers.

Further strengthening WIPA’s governance structure was the appointment of Rashada Williams as a non-elected director. Williams joins Shakera Selman as the second female director on the board, marking a significant step towards greater diversity and inclusivity within the association. The inclusion of Williams brings valuable perspectives from a current women’s player, enhancing WIPA’s ability to address the specific needs and concerns of female cricketers. This appointment reflects WIPA’s commitment to fostering a more representative and equitable environment within the organization.

Following the AGM, President Hinds expressed his gratitude for the renewed mandate and reiterated his commitment to serving the players’ interests. He acknowledged the importance of the strategic alignment between the AGM and the Women’s Super 50 Cup, highlighting WIPA’s dedication to promoting women’s cricket and ensuring the voices of female players are heard. Hinds extended a warm welcome to Rashada Williams, emphasizing the value her perspective will bring to the board.

The re-election of the executive team and the appointment of Williams signify a period of stability and continuity for WIPA. The association’s focus remains on advocating for fair compensation, improved playing conditions, and enhanced player welfare. WIPA will continue to play a crucial role in shaping the future of West Indies cricket, working to ensure the players have a strong voice and their rights are protected.

In the coming years, WIPA faces several key challenges and opportunities. These include negotiating collective bargaining agreements, addressing player concerns related to the evolving international cricket landscape, and advocating for greater investment in the development of West Indian cricket at all levels. WIPA will also continue to work closely with Cricket West Indies (CWI) and other stakeholders to promote the growth and sustainability of the game in the region. The re-elected leadership team and the addition of Williams to the board position WIPA to effectively navigate these challenges and continue to serve as a vital advocate for the interests of West Indian cricketers.
